The Rosetta stone is a basalt stele(slab), an ancient artifact. It was discovered (found) in 1799 by a French soldier digging the Egyptian sand. Rosetta stone has become one of the greatest archeological finds for the present and the main source of modern understanding of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone is a fragment of a larger stone which has the decree of the tsar Ptolemaeus the Vth (about 200 years BC) written on it and translated into three languages. The Rosetta stone is 114,4 cm(centimetres) high, 72,3 cm wide and 27,9 cm thick. It weighs approximately 760 kg. There are three inscriptions there.(The stone contains three inscriptions).  The top register contains Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the second one contains Demotic text, and the third one is written in Ancient Greek.
