Захищаючи права і вольності січовиків, цей кошовий отаман декілька разів брав участь у запорозьких депутаціях до Санкт-Петербурга. Опікувався заселенням запорозьких земель, сприяв переселенню туди селян з різних куточків України. Попри вимоги поміщиків, не видавав із володінь Січі втікачів. Підтримував створення хуторів і зимівників, вважаючи їх засобом стримування наступу царизму на землі Січі. Після зруйнування Січі заарештований і засланий до в’язниці на території Соловецького монастиря, де понад 25 років провів в одиночній камері. За указом імператора Олександра І, був звільнений, але за власним бажанням залишився в тому самому монастирі, де й помер у віці 113 років.
