The castle stood high on the rocky hill above the village. It cast a
cold shadow over the houses and fields. None of the villagers ever went near
the castle. At night they stayed close to their fires and kept their doors
locked.
The castle was nearly in ruin. It was a rotting jumble of stone and
timber. But someone lived there. One man. He lived there alone.
Who was this man? Nobody really knew. Some people said, he
was half man, half wolf. Most people thought he was a vampire. Everyone
feared him.
Late one night a stranger came to the village inn. He said the
vampire in the castle was dead. The villagers did not believe him. They thought vampires lived forever.
That night there was a violent storm. Lightning flashed across the
howling sky, thunder shook the roofs of the houses. The storm stopped
quite suddenly. At that moment the lid of the big coffin of the vampire began
to open. As the coffin opened, the storm died to a whisper. The body in the
coffin took the violent energy of the night. The vampire was back.
The next day was bright and sunny. Birds sang in the trees. The
castle looked beautiful in the dawn light. People got up early and cleared
away the debris from the storm. There were many cracked slates and broken
windows. The villagers put back the chimney pots and mended their
fences. Life went on.
But the next night another terrible thing happened, an awful cry rang
round the village. "Murder! .."
