My favourite writer.
My name ja Jam, I am thirteen years old. I live in England, in Nottingham, I am
fond of reading English literature. We've got a big home library. My favourile
writer ig Charles Dickens. He was born in 1812 and livexi till 1 870. He is stie of
England's greatest writers. At a young age Dickens was forced to work in a factors
undct terrible conditions. The boy's childhood was very hard and sad. Then
Dickens worked as a reporter in law courts and later for London newspapers. In
1837 he published his comic novel "The Pickwick Papers" which made
him
popular. A long line of successful novels followed: "Oliver Twist 1837), "A
Christirias Carol" (1843), "A Tale of Two Çilies" (1859) and "Great Expectations"
(1861). Dickens saw all the social evils of the English society and they worried
him greatly. I'd like to point to the most favourite books of mine written by this
famous writer. The first one is a novel "David Copperfield" which he vote in
1849 - 1850. This novel is partly based on Dickens's early life and his struggle to
become a writer. The characters in the book were actual people Dickens knew
while many adventures of the hero, David Copperfield, were part of his own
experience as a young boy. Another novel which is worth reading is "A Christmas
Carol". It's a wonderful story written by Dickens more than a century and a hall
ago. The writer wanted to show that love, care and patience: weię muci, sironger
that greediness, anger and hatred. People of all generations and of all times should
Terncmber about il.

3 things you (probably)didn't know about
Sleep
Everybody oves it. Everybody needs it. No-one seems
to get enough of it. We all know that most people need
eight hours sleep, and that REM" sleep is when you have
most dreams, but here are three questions about sleep
which you may not know the answer to:
How can video games help us control our dreams?
.What is Sleeping Beauty Syndrome?
What did our ancestors use to do in the middle of the
night (which we don't}?
Living your dreams
universicy psychologist in Canada believes that people
who play video games are more likely to be able to
control their own dreams. Jayne Gackenbach studied the
dreams of regular video gamers and non-gamers and found
5 that people who frequently played video games experienced
lucid' dreams more often. A lucid dream is one in which
we are aware that we are dreaming, In a lucid dream, the
dreamer is sometimes able to control or influence what is
happening to them in the dream- very similar to controlling
1o the action ofa character in a video game.
Dreams and video games are both parallel universes,
says Gackenbach, 'Gamers spend hours a day in a virtual
reality and they are used to controlling their game
environments, and this seems to help them to do the
15 same when they are dreaming.
Gackenbacth also discovered that video gamers have
fewer nightmares than non-gamers. Some experts
believe that we have nightmares to help us practise for
ife-threatening situations in a safe environment. Since
20 video gamers already practise those situations regularly in
games, Gackenbach's research suggests that video gamers
may have less need of nighemares. But, interestingly, when
gamers do have a nightmare they react differently to non-
gamers: "What happens with gamers, says Gackenbach, 'is
s that when they have a frightening experience in a dream
they don't run away like most of us do, they rurn round
and fght back
