A childless woman, on the advice of a sorceress, raised a girl out of a grain of a tulip an inch tall - Thumbelina. Cradle for her was a nut shell, a boat - a petal of a tulip in a dish with water and flowers, where the girl sailed and sang. One night she was stolen by a toad to make her a bride for her ugly son.
Thumbelina burst into tears from the fact that she considered herself ugly, although in fact she was very pretty. In winter, the girl left the forest and made her way to the mink of the field mouse. She warmed and fed the poor thing, left her at home and advised her to marry a rich mole. In the meantime, the mole was already begging for Thumbelina, and everyone was preparing for the wedding. In the autumn, the dowry was ready, and the girl's words that she did not want to marry a mole threatened her mouse with her teeth. The bird again offered to fly away - and this time Thumbelina did not refuse. In the warm edge of the swallow, she planted a girlfriend in a flower where the king of elves sat. He proposed to the beautiful woman; the wedding gave her a pair of beautiful wings.
It was eight o’clock in the morning and time for me to go to work. I looked out of the window . It rained hard. « You will got wet through if you go out now», said my mother. « No, I…», I answered, « I will take an umbrella.» We have five umbrellas in the house, but when I wanted to take one, I found that there were not one that I could use: they all were torn or broken. So I took them all and carried them to the umbrella maker, saying that I would call for the umbrellas on my way home in the evening. When I went to have lunch in the afternoon, it still raining very hard. I went to the nearest cafe, and sat down at a table. A few minutes later a young woman came in and sat down at the same table with me. When I finished my lunch and was ready to leave, I absentmindedly took her umbrella and started for the exit. She stopped me saying that I took her umbrella. I returned the umbrella with apologies. In the evening I went to the umbrella maker, took my five umbrellas and got on the tram to go home. It so happened that the woman I met at the cafe rided in the same tram. When she saw me with my five umbrellas, she said, «You had a successful day today, haven't you?»
