Leо Ivanovich Yashin (1929 — 1990) is a well-known Russian football player (goalkeeper). He was 1956 Olympic champion, European champion, the champion of the USSR's football championships.
Lev Yashin was born on October 22, 1929 in Moscow into a working family. During the great Patriotic war the Yashins moved to the Volga region. Despite the fact that in 1943 Lev began working at the factory, he devoted a lot of time to playing football. When the following year he moved to Moscow he started both working on the plant and playing as a goalkeeper in a local football club.
In 1949, Lev Yashin began playing for the Dynamo club in Moscow. First he played for the youth team but in 1953 he became a goalkeeper in the first team. The next year Leo Yashin with his Dynamo team won the USSR championship; they won the Cups of the USSR for three times.
Together with the team he won The summer Olympics in 1956, then in 1960 the European Cup, in 1966 his team got 4th place in the World Football Championship Cup. Yashin was also awarded the highest football award-the Golden ball. In 1971 he left the team, devoting himself to coaching.
In addition to his football biography Leo Yashin is also known as a successful hockey player (being a goalkeeper with the team which won the USSR Cup, took 3rd place in the USSR championship). However he preferred football to hockey.
