Shirts and trousers were the traditional everyday clothes of commoners in the X-XIV centuries. Shirts were sewn of linen fabrics of various colors with the length below the thighs. Also, they were worn loosely and tied with a colored lace or a tight strap. On holidays, the shirt was complemented with embroidered sleeves and round collars. Trousers tapered to the bottom and were tied with a lace at the waist as well as in case of the shirts. The traditional footwear of the peasants (both men and women) were bast shoes, instead of socks and stockings there were foot clothes in those days, strips of fabric that were tied around the feet and ankles. On the head men had been wearing felt hoods. In the XV-XVII centuries, the everyday dress of the peasants changed somewhat. This way, the traditional incision on the neck of the men's shirt moves from the centre to the left side, and the shirt becomes shorter itself and gets the name of "kosovorotka". A bit later button-down clothing appears such as kaftan or zipun. The last one is a knee-high woolen dress, slightly widened downwards, with narrow sleeves and a butted clasp.

Kaftan is an outerwear below the knee with long sleeves and a high collar. Kaftans of noble boyars had been usually richly decorated with expensive materials, embroidery or a lace. The winter outerwear was an unbuttoned fur coat. There had been mostly worn ones of sable, fox, hare, polar fox, squirrel or sheepskin. On the surface, the fur coat had been usually covered with fabric (the peasants used cloth for this, and the boyars used expensive imported fabrics, instead)
