Puzzled, they asked a passer-by about the inn. “Oh, there used to be an inn here,” the old man told the boys, “but it closed about a hundred years ago. There was a police station right next to it.” both boys remembered the policeman they had seen sitting in the inn. They had spent the night with ghosts of the past!
