Reading. Task 1. Read the text. Playing football We know that football was first played in England about 150 years ago, but the game is really much older. Games with ball were well known hundreds of years ago. The old Roman game “Harpastum”, the Old French game “Suolt”, Georgian “Lelo”, Russian “Shalyga” and many others were all forms of ball games. In the past all these football games were not played at the stadiums or on a football field. They were played in the squares and streets of cities and villages, and they were dangerous to the windows and doors of the houses. People in those days enjoyed their ball games and got as excited about the game as they do now. Young workers used to leave their work to take part in the game. At the beginning of the XVII century, special laws were made against playing ball games. Nobody was allowed to play, and for two hundred and fifty years, there were no ball games. People began to play again in the second half of the XIX century. In 1863, a meeting was called in a pub in Great Queen Street in London, for the purpose of deciding the rules of the game. The people were very excited, they shouted: “only feet” and “hands and feet”. It was decided to introduce 13 rules of playing football at this meeting. These rules were published in December 1863, and later became the international rules of football game all over the world. Task 1. Read the texts carefully. At the moment I am а student of a comprehensive school #45. I like my school, but I think it could be better, so I would like to tell you about my ideal school.
My ideal school would be situated in a quiet place near a big park, so that students could walk there after classes to relax. There would be a big buffet, where students could have a cup of tea or coffee with a sandwich during the breaks. My ideal school would also have lockers for books and personal things like in American schools.
Nowadays we have to study a lot of subjects at school. But I think that the most important subjects are those, which will help us to pass the Unified State Exam and to enter the university. In my ideal school the majority of sciences would be given at fact-finding level and students of a high school would be allowed to choose subjects, which they would like to learn on a higher level, according to their aims and preferences. But of course, Russian will be a compulsory subject for everyone at my school, because we must admit that it is necessary for the literate writing. Information technology is another important subject, because computers simplify our lives and each of students will need to use it in future.
As well as the subjects of the curriculum, there would be many after-school clubs, such as chess, drama, music, arts and sports.
To sum up, I think my school would be a place I would like to go to
Most people dream of having certain things in their life, but possessions are not as important as life aims. It is simply vital for each person to have aims and to live trying to fulfill them. At first, they might seem impossible, but if we genuinely want something, it usually comes true. Aims can be different. Some people connect them with professional growth and career, others want to have a large family with many children in it. There are some that want to become famous or to stand out from the crowd. All these aims are worth considering. As a child I dreamt of having a bicycle and my parents bought it for me for good behavior and excellent marks at school. Our goals change and mature as we become older. However, we should remember if we really want something to become true, we should make every effort to achieve it. Nothing comes easy
