Maslenitsa is a jolly and beautiful Russian holiday. This celebration lasts for a week. This is the last week before Great Lent. Sometimes they call it the "pancake week", because in this time everyone has to cook and eat pancakes. Why precisely pancakes? Because pancakes are round and yellow, just like the sun! On this holiday Russians are happy about the sun and spring and see off the long winter.
This is a very happy week. Everyday there is a special activity. For example, on Tuesday different games are held in the open air. Everyone can take part in them. On Wednesday you have to visit your mother-in-law and eat pancakes at her place. On Thursday you can go sled-riding. On Sunday a straw effigy symbolizing winter is burnt. On this Sunday you have to ask for forgiveness from all your close relatives and friends. That is why Russians call each other on the phone or send messages and ask to forgive them for all the bad things they did. And of course, on this day you have to eat pancakes .
Maslenitsa begins on Monday, which is called the "meeting." On this day, they celebrate Shrovetide, dress up a stuffed doll, build snowy mountains.
Tuesday is a flirtation. Build snow and ice fortresses, buffoons sing their ditties.
Wednesday is a “gourmet”. On this day, sons-in-law come to pancakes for mother-in-law.
Thursday - “revelry”, the most fun day. They carry a scarecrow on a wheel, ride, sing songs, begin to carol.
Friday - "mother-in-law of the evening." Now the mother-in-law invites her to herself, treats with pancakes.
Saturday - "sister-in-law gatherings." The daughter-in-law gives gifts to her sister-in-law (sisters). On this day, an effigy of Pancake week is burned and finally say goodbye to winter. Ashes are scattered across the field to have a good harvest.
