a few or few = используем с исчислимыми понятиями, то есть с теми, которые посчитать можем (друзья, носки, карандаши и тп).

Разница в том, что где есть артикль а = это достаточное количество (I have a few friends - у меня несколько друзей и мне этого достаточно), а где нет артикля = это недостаточное количество (I have only few friends - у меня всего лишь несколько друзей, мне этого мало)
