Для первых каторжников жизнь была тяжёлой. Колонисты зависили от сюдов Англии, поставляющей всю их еду и провизию. Фермерство было трудным. Это было именно то время, когда люди начинали разводить тонкорунных мериносов из-за их шерсти. Позже шерсть(производство шерсти) стала важной отраслью. Много каторжников заработало свою свободу и осталось в Австралии. Множество английских поселенцев видели возможности нового континента, несколько свободных колоний были основаны в начале 19-ого столетия. Шесть первых колоний выросли и стали штатами современной Австралии: Новый Южный Уэльс, Виктория, Квинсленд, Южная Австралия, Западная Австралия и Тасмания(островной штат). Независимые колонии скоро поняли необходимость работать сообща над определёнными вопросами, они начали видеть необходимость в объединении. Конституция была написана и утверждена Британской Короной, и 1 января 1901 года шесть отдельных колоний стали штатами в новом Австралийском Союзе.
