The Tretyakov Gallery's history began in 1856 from a collection of paintings belonging to Pavel Tretyakov, a merchant. This collection gained popularity and appreciation of Russian public because of Tretyakov's good choices of art for his collection. The building where the collection was kept used to be the mansion of Tretyakov brothers. It was rebuilt several times to accomodate the growing collection. The collection was opened to the public in 1874 as a private musem and was presented to the city of Moscow 18 years later.
