Dear Lena,
I am Martin Oldfield. I'm Jim's friend. I live in London.
Last summer I visited Russia. It was really great! I was
in St Petersburg. It's such a beautiful and interesting
city. I spent two weeks there. The weather was fine.
We went sightseeing. We travelled on a comfortable
bus round the city. But best of all I enjoyed the palaces
which are situated near St Peter. We were in Pavlovsk,
Pushkin and Peterhof.
There is the greatest and the most beautiful palace
in Peterhof. It was amazing to see so many fountains
there. The guide told us a lot of stories and legends
about them. It was interesting to listen to him. After
the trip we returned to the city by ship. It was fantastic!
For a minute I imagined myself as a seaman!

During Caesar's campaign against Rome he had to cross a small river, the Rubicon. The river flowed on the border between Gaul and the Roman Republic. To cross the Republican border with a military force was equal to an open declaration of war. Having ordered his chariot to stop, Caesar sat thinking for a long time hesitating what decision to take. Then, ready to face his future bravely, he said: "The die is cast," and ordered his troops into the water. After a quick and easy victory over one of his opponents in Asia Minor, Caesar sent a message which contained only three Latin words; the
corresponding English words were: "I came, I saw, I conquered."

Основными архитектурными достопримечательностями Санкт-Петербурга являются, церковь на Крови, Исаакиевский и Казанский соборы, Александро-Невская Лавра, Петропавловская крепость и многие другие. 


The most famous place which everybody wishes to see is the Hermitage. It’s a huge museum, which houses more than 3 million art items, and is situated in the building of Winter Palace. The first person who started collecting paintings and sculptures of famous European artists was the Empress Catherine II. Another big and often visited museum in St Petersburg is the Russian Museum. It holds the biggest collection of Russian art, including paintings, sculptures, items of applied and folk arts. The main architectural sights of St Petersburg are the Savior on the Blood Church, St. Isaac's and Kazan Cathedrals, Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Peter and Paul Fortress and many others.
