"We use could for general ability. But if we want to say that somebody did something in a specific situation, we use managed to or was/were able to (not could)".
То есть,
мы используем could для выражения возможности или что-то сделать вообще, в целом. В то время как managed to используется для того, чтобы указать, что кому-то удалось что-то сделать в конкретной, "единичной" ситуации.
Сравните:
Jack was an excellent tennis player when he was younger. He could beat anybody. (Джек отлично играл в теннис, когда был моложе. Он мог обыграть любого)
и
Jack and Andy played a match yesterday. Andy played well, but Jack managed to beat him. (Вчера Джек и Энди играли (в теннис). Энди играл хорошо, но Джек смог (Джеку удалось) обыграть его)
