We have only had cars for about 120 years and they were so slow and noisy. Two German engineers made the first car in 1885, it only had 3 wheels. Companies like Rolls-Royce were very expensive because people made each car by hand. In 1913 the Ford Motor Company started to make their cars in a special factory and they were less expensive than other cars. So by 1950 American cars were large but in Europe and Asia drivers preferred small cars. Most cars have a gasoline or a Diesel engine. The driver starts the engine with a key and the engine can power the front, the back or all four wheels. The driver uses the pedals to go faster, to change gears, and to stop. Cars usually have five gears for going forward and one gear for going backward. You have to wear a seat belt to protect yourself if there is a crush. Sports car are low. This helps the car to go fast because air can move easily over it. Bugatti Veyron goes faster than 400 kilometers per hour and cost 1.5 million US dollars. The Peel P50 is the smallest car in the world. It was first made in 1963 and is 134 centimeters long and 99 centimeters wide, its top speed is 61 kilometers per hour.
