Timber is the most ancient structural material. In comparison with steel timber is lighter, cheaper, easier to work and its mechanical properties are good. On the other hand, timber has certain disadvantages. First, it burns and is therefore unsuitable for fireproof buildings. Second, it decays.
At present an enormous amount of timber is employed for a vast number of purposes. In building timber is used too.

Timber is a name applied to the cut material derived from trees. Timber used for building purposes is divided into two groups: softwoods and hardwoods. Hardwoods are chiefly used for decorative purposes, as for paneling, veneering in furniture and some of them are selected for structural use because of their high strength and durability. In modern construction timber is often used for window and door frames, flooring, fences and gates, wall plates, for temporary buildings and unpainted internal woodwork.
Timber cannot be used for either carpenters’ or joiners’ work immediately it has been felled because of the large amount of sap which it contains. Elimination of this moisture increases the strength, durability and resilience of timber.

Agent: Have you ever been to Brighton?

Visitor: No, but we want a more exciting holiday.

Agent: Have you ever been to the Sahara Desert?

Visitor: No, we haven’t.

Agent: Then this is a holiday for you, a month in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Visitor: Is it interesting?

Agent: Yes, there are sandstorms every day and snakes everywhere. Have you ever been bitten by the dangerous snake?

Visitor: Well, well, thank you, but the journey is too expensive. Have

you got a cheaper one?

Agent: But it’s such a rare chance to have an unusual experience! Well, how about the Arctic Ocean? We can give you a fortnight in a small boat with a hole in the bottom of it to make the journey more exciting. And you’ll have food only for a few days.

Visitor: A few days. You said the holiday is for the fortnight!

Agent: But isn’t it thrilling?

Visitor: Have you got anything not so exciting?

Agent: Oh yes, let me see. This is … holiday to remember. We’ll drop you in the middle of the Amazon jungle by a parachute with a map of the London underground.

Visitor: I don’t think I like the idea. It’s so frightening!

Agent: But very, very exciting!

Visitor: Have you got something not so far from home?

Agent: Well, what about two weeks in Brighton, staying in a nice quiet hotel by the sea?

Visitor: It’s a good idea.

Agent: And it is a pretty exciting one, isn’t it? No snakes, no jungles, enough food.

Visitor: Yes, we’ll take it!

How are the things going on? Did something new happen in your life? Having received your letter, I wanted to answer it immediately. But I was working a lot during the last two weeks. So I was pressed for time and did not manage to carry out my intentions.  

In my country spring has already set. It is quite warm and really sunny all days long. Being at work I always imagine myself strolling down some parks. I wish you could join me! It would be funny! Some days ago my friend advised me to read a very interesting book. I did it and I would like you to know this author. Are you ready to read good litterature?  

Tell me more about your work and free time. Are you satisfied with all this? What are your plans for this summer? Maybe we will be able to meet one day?
