George Washington George Washington was born on 22nd February 1732 and grew up in colonial Virginia. His formal education was slight: no more than 7 or 8 years of school. His favourite subject was arithmetic. He studied enough history and geography to know something of the outside world. But he never learned very much about literature, foreign languages and history.
George started working at 14 as a surveyor but later he became a leader with the Virginia armed force and became involved in the war with the French and Indians. George was against the ill treatment of people by their British rulers and fought with them for their rights. When the British disagreed, George Washington and his people decided to go to war.
In May 1775 Washington was declared as the General of the Continental Army. It was a hard time as George Washington had to train an army of colonial farmers to fight against trained British soldiers. The Battle of Yorktown was the last battle of the American Revolution. It was in 1789 that George Washington became the first President of the United States.
The capital of Washington was named after him, but he never served there. Many cities, parks, streets, bridges, lakes, and schools have his name. Washington's portrait appears on postage stamps, on the $1 bill, and on the quarter.
