England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales together form the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I think no one know about all in this country because It is a very unusual place. I could not choose one city or one historical provinces so I decided to combine all the cities and find out which of them is most popular among tourists. Thus, I would like to tell you about 10 cities which people advise us to visit, if you will be there.
Liverpool holds the 10th position.
It is one of the biggest cities in the United Kingdom. This city played an important role in the Industrial Revolution: there was a huge shipbuilding plant which was a main trade nub. Since the 1960,s Liverpool has become a cult place for lovers of The Beatles. However If you visit the city, do not forget about the wonderful sights of Liverpool such as Liverpool Cathedral or the ensemble of urban buildings of the port which were recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
St. Andrews comes ninth.
It is considered the homeland of golf. Moreover, this city is known for its ancient university and its famous graduates, e.g. Prince William. St. Andrews used to the religious capital of Scotland during a lot of centuries. Nowadays only the ruins of main Cathedral remind us about it.
Inverness occupies the eighth position.
It is a city-port in the Scottish Highlands. There you will hear a lot of stories about ghosts which haunt the old castles. But the most wonderful place is the legendary Loch Ness.
York captures the seventh position.
This city was founded in 71 AD. The most interesting place there is York museum which will tell you the history of the city. There you can walk around the medieval streets, stay in cozy pubs or do the shopping in small stores.
Stratford-upon-Avon comes sixth.
This small town is visited about 3 million tourists a year. Do you know why? Because it is a birthplace of great writer: William Shakespeare. There he was born, there he married, worked and was buried. The city can help you plunge into the atmosphere of the old good England.
Oxford occupies the fifth position.
This place is famous for the one of the most prestigious university in Europe. Oxford amazes visitors with its elegant architecture. That is why poet Matthew Arnold called it «the city with slumbering spires». Everywhere there is a student ambiance.
Cambridge holds the fourth position.
It is also one of the British university towns. Cambridge is a symbol of the British tradition and high quality education. Among the graduates of this famous university are Prince Charles, Isaac Newton, George Darwin and many others. Lovers of art will find there great theatres, interesting exhibitions and a lot of entertaining activities for all tastes.
Bath captures the third position.
It is one of the most beautiful cities of the United Kingdom. Bath is famous for its healing water sources. People from different countries come there not only to improve their health but also to enjoy this open-air museum. The city has got about 5 thousand buildings which are under protection of UNESCO. Among them is even the Roman ruins!
Edinburgh has the second position.
This city is almost at the top of my rating. And it is not for not lying! Edinburgh is unlike any others city. There is a magic castle on a hill, the medieval legends, pubs and pipers. The city is famous for its amazing activities such as Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Hogmanay and Edinburgh festival.
And finally, the winner is London.
London is the capital of Great Britain. This city attracts tourists like a magnet because it is the center of the country’s cultural, financial and political life. Nowadays London is the home for 7 million people. This city has got 32 districts. The British call London «The Great Smog» or «The Great Wen».
At this point I stop. Maybe I did not open new things for you but I believe that this rating will be useful! I hope you are interested in my
