This is a story about Michael Scott. He grew up with a heart defect. While other kids were playing football, he was visiting hospitals. The only sports events in his life were sports programs on TV. Most of all he enjoyed watching the London Marathon.
The first London Marathon was organized when he was 14 years old. More than 46,000 people participated in the marathon. But only 30,000 participants managed to cross the finishing line.
Each year he tried to imagine what it would be like to line up before all the crowds and run the 42.2 km route. So he decided to talk to his doctor and to find out, if there was any chance to train his body and to run 42.2 kms. Then he began walking for a few minutes at a time and lifting weights. After a year of training he could already run. His doctor was thrilled with his progress and allowed him to continue forward.
When he became 19, it was the time to apply for the Marathon. He worked together with his doctor to plan his training schedule.
On race day his family and friends came to watch and support him. It was the most difficult and exciting experience in Michael's life. Many runners took four to five hours to complete the race. Michael finished the race in less than 6 hours.
Today he is still running. But he hasn't taken part in the London Marrathon again. He enjoys taking part in the atmosphere and telling his story of success story to the other athletes. He learned that as long as he has faith in himself, he can do almost anything.
