Kul-Sharif mosque in Kazan — the main mosque of Tatarstan, one of the largest Muslim temples in Europe, which is located on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin.
The construction of the mosque, or rather, its reconstruction, was carried out for almost ten years — from 1996 to 2005. This beautiful architectural complex was built to replace the legendary mosque of the Kazan khanate, which was destroyed during the storming of Kazan by the troops of Ivan the terrible in 1552.
The mosque was named after Kul-Sharif, the last Imam of the destroyed temple.
To be precise, before the conquest of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible, the Kremlin had five mosques, while Kul-Sharif was known to have eight minarets (more than any other mosque on Earth).
