17 Jeff and Chris were breathing heavily while they WERE CLIMBING
the mountain.
The switchbacks were getting steeper and steeper.
18 It was the HIGHEST mountain in the area.
19 The boys HAVE SLOWED considerably since the beginning of their adventu-
re.
Chris could tell that Jeff was losing steam.
"Do you want to sit for a minute?" asked Chris.
"Yeah," replied Jeff in a hollow voice.
20 The boys sat down on pine needles and TOOK swigs of water in an attempt to cool off.
21"We are at the same point where we STOPPED our hiking last time, " commented Jeff.
"That's right, " said Chris, "so we should keep
going to get further up this mountain. "
"I just don't think I'll manage to do it today,
today, " said Jeff.
"Jeff, you've got to try, " encouraged Chris.
22 Jeff HAD THOUGHT about it and then decided he did want to give it a try. Before he could change his mind, he bolted up the hill. He climbed so fast he almost fell over.
"Jeff Slow down, " called Chris.
23"No way. If I stop, I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE it," yelled Jeff. He continued his push up the mountain.
24 Chris followed close behind. Each grueling step shot pain throughout their BODIES but they just kept going. Higher and higher they climbed.
25 Before long, they found THEMSELVES just below the top of the mountain. Jeff looked back at Chris.
"Are you ready?" asked Jeff.
"More than I'll ever be, " answered Chris.
The two climbed to the top of the mountain and
watched the sun rising. It was a beautiful morning.
Giant pandas are vulnerable bears that
are typically found in the southern region
of China.
26 They are some of the most RECOGNIZABLE animals due to the black patches on their body.
27 Although giant pandas share a name with the red
panda, the two are NOT RELATIVES.
28 Although giant pandas were once common in both lowland and highland areas in China, human activities have limited the POPULATION to highland regions.
29 Established in 1987, the Chengdu centre was home to 50 pandas according to recent figures, which is SINGIFICANTLY more than most other centres in China.
The centre allows tourists to participate in some activities such as caring for the pandas.
30 Tourists who become panda KEEPERS are given certificates as well as a T-shirt.
31 The base limits INVOLVING in the program to people who are between the ages of 12 and 65 due to the danger posed by the pandas.

Why Do People Travel?

People have been travelling all over the world since ancient times. In those times they set off for a journey (1) mostly for the needs of trade. Nowadays millions of people travel because they want to broaden their knowledge of the world. They are eager to see everything with their own eyes: (2) other countries, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns. Travelling is the movement and change which people need. Some people travel in search of beauty, they marvel at nature's most spectacular attractions. They are looking for new impressions and thrilling experiences. They are eager to meet different people, (3) to taste different food, to listen to different musical rhythms. Those, who live in the countryside, usually make trips to big cities, they spend their holidays (4) visiting museums and art galleries, doing the shopping and dining at exotic restaurants whereas city-dwellers prefer to go to quiet places where they can relax, bathe in a river or lake and lie in the sun.
