This university town is very beautiful. The oldest university there is Oxford. The first of its colleges was founded in 1249. The university now has thirty-five colleges and about thirteen thousand students, many of them from other countries.There were no women at Oxford until 1878. It is not easy to get a place at Oxford University to study for a degree.But outside the university there are many smaller private colleges which offer less difficult courses and where it is easy to enrol. Originally the university accepted only male students. However, in 1869 the first female college was opened. The academic year in Cambridge is divided into three terms. The first one runs from October till December, the second one – from January till March and the third one – from April till June. The holidays in between the terms include Christmas, Easter and long summer vacations. The university houses 114 libraries with over 8 million volumes. It also contains eight arts, cultural and scientific museums, and a botanic garden. Among them, the Museum of Zoology, the Museum of Classical Archeology, the Museum of the History of Science, the Polar Museum. By the way, many important scientific discoveries were made by Cambridge graduates, such Isaac Newton, James Maxwell, Francis Bacon, Charles Darwin and others.
